If your panels went up between 2009 and 2015, they were installed into a completely different energy system than the one you’re using today. The panels might still be doing their job quietly on the roof. But the wiring standards, inverter technology, what the grid expects from you, and what your household actually needs from a solar system have all moved on since then.
Australia’s first solar boom was a genuine surge. Installations broke 50,000 systems a year in 2009, passed 100,000 in 2010, and peaked at over 360,000 in 2011, according to Clean Energy Regulator data. A large share of Australian rooftops are still running systems from that window, now 11 to 17 years old.
For many of these homes, a solar system upgrade doesn’t necessarily mean replacing everything. It can mean bringing individual components up to modern standards and making the existing system work better for today’s energy needs.
The inverter does the hardest job in a solar system, converting DC power into the AC your home uses, and it’s also the shortest-lived part. Most are built for 10-15 years, and units from the early 2010s are commonly underperforming or throwing faults by now. The bigger issue is often what they can’t do: no app monitoring, so a fault can quietly clip your output for months, and no way to connect to a battery or EV charger, since neither was a mainstream purchase back then. In 2012, Australia became the only country to make rooftop DC isolators mandatory – a safety switch mounted right next to the panels, exposed to full sun and heat cycling for years. It didn’t hold up well: data from Energy Safe Victoria linked most PV-related rooftop fires to isolator failure under heat stress, and faulty isolators became recognised as the leading cause of rooftop solar fires nationally. Standards Australia rewrote AS/NZS 5033 in 2021 to remove the mandatory rooftop isolator altogether. If your system predates the latest standards, that doesn’t automatically mean it needs replacing. It does mean a professional inspection should form part of any solar system upgrade discussion.
Solar panels don’t necessarily stop working as they age. Instead, their electricity generation gradually decreases over time. The Australian Government notes that this is known as solar panel degradation, with performance warranties specifying the minimum output a panel is expected to maintain over its warranty period.
Most modern solar panels are expected to last around 20-30 years, so an older system isn’t automatically ready for replacement. But if your panels are more than a decade old, their current output is worth checking against what the system originally generated. Dirt, shading, weather exposure, faults, and normal degradation can all affect actual performance.
In the boom years, some states paid extraordinary feed-in tariffs – South Australia’s premium rate peaked near 44 cents per kWh in 2010-2011. Systems from that era were built to export as much as possible, because exporting was the point. That’s flipped: Victoria’s Essential Services Commission stopped setting a minimum feed-in tariff from 1 July 2025, and retailers now set their own, some barely above zero (see our feed-in tariffs by state breakdown). A system tuned to maximise exports in 2011 is now working against its own economics.

A solar system upgrade rarely means replacing the entire installation. Depending on the condition and configuration of the system, the work may involve solar inverter replacement, updated safety hardware, improved monitoring, additional battery-compatible equipment, or other targeted changes.
